Discussion:
How to unlock a hfs partition?
(too old to reply)

Hi all,

I'm trying to copy a file from ext2 to hfs partition, but the command:
# mount -t hfs -o rw /dev/hda25 /mnt
yields the warning:
hfs: filesystem is marked locked, mounting read-only.

Is there any way to unlock it?

Thanks for your attention,
Ennio

Since you have a hfs partition, I assume you have a dual-boot with
OSX?

In that case, simply boot in OSX: the file system will be checked and
unlocked. After reboot in linux, you will be able to mount it
read-write.

Doesn't one have to disable Journaling from OSX side for "safe"
read-write access?

hfs is hfs, and there also has hfsplus, both has journaling function.

What I mean is that You can use "journaling" feature with the hfsplus
(macos extended) file system disks (in mac os x), but I'm not sure You
can use that with hfs standard disks. I'm agree that hfs==hfs but hfs
standard <> hfsplus.

Hi all,

I don't even get that message, mount shows it with the option (rw), but
no matter what thing I try it tells me that the filesystem is read-only.

Yes, hfsplus for me.

I reboot from time to time to OSX, but it doesn't change anything about
writability to the filesystem.

Ah, but just found this message in /var/log/dmesg:

#v+
hfs: write access to a jounaled filesystem is not supported, use the force option at your own risk, mounting read-only.
#v-

I'm not really sure if I would want to turn off journaling in OSX...

So long,

Hi Ruben,

thanks for your reply. However your cure wasn't enough ;(
Maybe because the dual-boot is with Mac OS9 (instead of OSX)!?
Although after booting OS9 I exit regularly, when I try again the
mouning from linux i still get:

"hfs: filesystem was not cleanly unmounted, running fsck.hfs is

BTW, 'fsck.hfs' is nowhere to be found (but I downloaded and ran
hfsplus).

Perhaps the lock has anything to do with 'file sharing' on OS9?

Sorry, I had HFS+ in mind instead of HFS. I use HFS+ myself and I've
had the same issue with it and, in my case, rebooting into OSX solves
the problem, because OSX checks the file system on boot and marks it
as 'clean'. And, regarding the other mails, I did switch off
journaling for my shared HFS+ partition (on purpose to be able to use
it on the linux side).

I'm afraid I can't offer much help with HFS and OS9...

fsck.hfs is included in the "hfsprogs" package, but I don't have any
experience with it.

hmm ... I only succeded in getting 'hfsutils' which does check hfs
directories, but doesn't unlock them!
I couldn't fine 'hfsprogs' (debian ppc) pckg.

Anyway I moved a few files to the hfs exchange partition the longer way:
uploaded them to my web private space ...

Thanks again,

If you are not having luck with (or cannot run) the Apple utilities, I
have SOMETIMES had some luck using a combination of hfsplus
http://packages.debian.org/source/hfsplus and the other, more lower
level utilities.

The syntax and usage of hfsplus is odd -- you don't mount the
filesystem onto the standard tree, and you mount, umount and check the
filesystem using hpmount, hpumount, and hpfsck commands.

If nothing else, hpmount MAY let you mount the volume and hpcopy may
copy the files, but I believe the functions are exposed only to the
command line interface and you cannot, for example, use that utility
to mount a volume in Konqueror or Gnome.

Nope! I tried all of them, excep hfsprogs (it's in 'unstable') and seems
to be having some problems (see older posts).
What seems strange to me is that checking the hfs partition with
(MacOS9) Disk First Aid doesn't evidence any problem on it.
May be it has something to do with that partition having been once 'shared'
on the private net?

Thanks to all who answered. Regards,

It's in unstable only due to some nasty 64 bit bugs in the code. The
package maintainer will disable building on 64 bit archs for the time
being. The code for hfsprogs comes directly from apple, but Rogério has
problems getting responses from them - and I have problems to find his
update on mentors to upload it to the pool so it can finally transition
to testing. He's currently not around for a few days, hopefully this
issue can get fixed; and if someone raises their voices we can think of
offering the package through backports.org.

Thanks for the words as usual, Rhonda.

The package builds well in an older chroot and, thus, I believe that it
can be backported without any problems.

Hi.
And, regarding the other mails, I did switch off journaling for my

Yes, otherwise, you can't write to the filesystem (unless you force it,
which should not be a good idea).
fsck.hfs is included in the "hfsprogs" package, but I don't have any
experience with it.
I am the maintainer of hfsprogs and the fsck.hfs that is included there
is the same one that is included in MacOS X 10.4.9 (if I recall
correctly).

If you encounter some problems with the package (which I hope that
transitions soon to testing), please let me know.
